There is public access to the lake nearby at Kate’s Brae, while the shoreline at Lochend Chalets is reserved exclusively for our guests.
For those who prefer two wheels, the forest trails around Aberfoyle offer some fantastic cycling, with bikes available to hire from Aberfoyle Bike Hire. Whether you’re after a gentle family ride or something more adventurous, there are routes to suit everyone.

“Here at Balmaha Bunkhouse we always recommend climbing Conic Hill. In fact, I wouldn’t leave Balmaha without ticking off both Inchcailloch and Conic Hill. The trail is moderately challenging, but the effort is more than rewarded by the spectacular views over Loch Lomond and the surrounding Arrochar Alps, which begin to reveal themselves just a third of the way up.
Or if you fancy a more relaxed day, especially if the sun is out, I would suggest the Millennium Forest Trail Beach. This is a gentle five-minute walk from Balmaha Pier and leads to quiet sandy and pebble beaches tucked along the wooded shoreline, perfect for wild swimming or soaking up the sun.
Guests always ask me where to eat! The Oak Tree Inn and St Mocha are the only places to eat in Balmaha, but both serve top-notch food. I usually pop into St Mocha for an ice-cream on a sunny day or an oat milk flat white when the weather is gloomy. The atmosphere is cosy, with shelves of interesting books dotted around, making it the perfect place to unwind.”
