Argyll Isles Self Catering Holidays

Self Catering Accommodation in the Argyll Isles >>
Argyll has some very famous Scottish Islands, including Bute, Mull, Iona, Islay, Jura and Colonsay. They are very diverse and different from each other. The Islands are diverse, some such as Tiree have many Gaelic speakers, while some are almost exclusively holiday homes and day trippers. Whichever you visit you will find the beauty and history captivating.
Bute
Self Catering Accommodation in Bute >>
Bute lies in the Firth of Clyde. It is approximately 15miles long by 5 miles wide with a population of just over 7000. The main town of Rothesay accounts for about 6500 of the population and has many shops, pubs and restaurants, plus a hospital, dental surgery, law firms and estate agents. Villages/suburbs on the island include: Ascog, Ardbeg, Kerrycroy, Kilchattan Bay, Kildavanan, Kingarth, Port Bannatyne, Rhubodach and Straad although some of these are a little more than collections of cottages.
Rothesay
Self Catering Accommodation in Rothesay >>
The main town is Rothesay on the east side of Bute. Rothesay Castle is one of the best surviving medieval castles in Scotland and was replaced, as the seat of the Marquises of Bute by the beautiful Mount Stuart. This is also on the east coast, south of Rothesay and both house and gardens are open to the public.
Mull
Self Catering Accommodation in Mull >>
The Isle of Mull has attractions for all the family, and offers a holiday where wildlife is around every corner, visitor attractions cater for all ages, and the whole family has a chance to live a lifestyle far removed from the hectic urban pressurised existence. Mull has become well known by all who view the BBC programmes Springwatch and Coast and is also now very well known as the home of the CBeebies programme Balamory, based around the coloured houses of Tobermory
Tobermory
Self Catering Accommodation in Tobermory >>
Tobermory was built as a fishing port in the late 18th century and is now the main village on Mull. It is a picture-postcard of a place with the brightly painted buildings along the main street to the pier and the high woodland-fringed hills surrounding the bay. The village has a good variety of shops, hotels, and other accommodation as well as being the administrative centre for the island. The harbour is always busy with fishing boats, yachts and the ferry to and from Kilchoan.
Islay
Self Catering Accommodation in Islay >>
The Isle of Islay is the southernmost island of the Inner Southern Hebrides of Scotland and lies in Argyll and Bute. The Isle of Jura, Kintyre peninsula and Northern Ireland are Islay's neighbours. Islay is pronounced as Eye-la. The earliest known reference to the Isle of Islay comes in Adomnan's, Vita Columbae, a biography of the Irish Saint, Columba or Colum Cille in about 720 AD. St Columba visited the Isle of Islay on his way north, prior to founding the famous monastery on the Isle of Iona, off the south-west tip of the Isle of Mull.
Colonsay
Self Catering Accommodation in Colonsay >>
The island of Colonsay lies in the Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland. Fifteen miles to the north lies the island of Mull; the eastern and southern horizons are bounded by the islands of Jura and Islay; and to the south west, just visible from a high point on a clear day, is the coast of Donegal in Ireland. To the west lies the Atlantic, with only the Du Hirteach lighthouse standing between Colonsay and Canada. Together with its semi-detatched neighbour Oransay, it forms an island group roughly ten miles long and two miles wide.
