Balnagowan Mill is owned by Jim and Paula Fraser. It has been in the Fraser family since 1986 and was extensively refurbished and extended in the winter of 2015/16. Jim is a native of Nethy Bridge being brought up in the Causer area before he left for further education in Glasgow and a successful career in tourism. Paula and Jim have lived in Dunblane since early 1980s and have two daughters and four grandchildren who are regular visitors to Mill for family holidays. A major factor in extending the Mill was to provide more space for the family when they are on holiday here.

The Mill takes it name from the former uses of the site where there are still traces of the network of mill lades that were used to divert timber logs to the site from the River Nethy and Abernethy Forest which is now a national nature reserve. The Mill site was a former iron smelting works in the 1700s which was developed by the York Building Company. The name Balnagowan means 'the place of the smiths' suggesting the iron 'smiths were based there.

The Mill is on the edge of the Abernethy Forest National Nature Reserve and within a stone's throw of the River Nethy where there are a network of family friendly walks and bike trails.
