What is Self-Catering?

A self-catering holiday home in Scotland can be defined as a self contained property offering clean, comfortable, furnished accommodation for visitors who are also provided with the means to prepare and cook their own meals.
Self-catering properties give you the freedom to live your day as you wish, and to enjoy a holiday program of your choice.
You will find a wide variety of different styles of accommodation from one bedroom studio apartments and flats in bustling city centres to a country estate house with 5 or 10 bedrooms. You will find all the following terms used across Scotland:
- Cottage - a cute, small place, often with historic charm
- House - larger, more formal accommodation
- Lodge - a home with rustic or wilderness theme
- Apartment - self contained accommodation that occupies only a part of the building (also known as a flat in the UK)
- Chalet - a wooden dwelling usually with wide overhanging eaves. Normally associated with rustic or mountain resorts.
Whichever style you choose, you can expect the following from the self-catering accommodation on this website:
- Overall quality assured to the declared 'Star' level by annual inspections from VisitScotland, the Scottish Tourist Board.
- Separate space for sitting and living , in addition to kitchen facilities and bedroom(s) and bathroom(s).
- Availability to rent by the week (seven nights), for a short break (2-3 nights) or by the night, according to the individual business concerned.
- A self-contained ‘home from home’, but not normally any ‘room service’, daily maid service, concierge or staffed reception.
