Travelling in Scotland by Rail

Scotrail train taking you to your holiday cottage

Travelling by rail can be an enjoyable and scenic way to arrive at your self-catering accommodation. Choose from a multitude of destinations all over Scotland, and a range of travel options from first class tickets on the Caledonian Sleeper train to the Jacobite Steam Train as featured in the Harry Potter films.

The major rail links in Scotland are:

  • National Rail Enquiries has a journey planner with timetables and fares.
  • ScotRail is the country’s main passenger rail carrier with destinations throughout Scotland.
  • West Coast Railways operates two services: The Jacobite and The Cambrian trains which are more about experience than speed.
  • Strathspey Steam Railway travels from Aviemore to Broomhill, and is run almost entirely by volunteers.
