PLACES TO STAY: MANSEFIELD HOUSE, SCOTLAND

In the shadow of the Arrochar Alps and on the shores of Loch Long, sits a luxurious home away from home in the Highlands.

Oh Scotland, what a place. It’s captured my heart and blows my mind every time I head north; those glowing mountain tops which burn with snow in the moonlight, those big awesome skies which wrap around your soul and an overwhelming sense of freedom and awe at every turn in the road.

Every Highlands adventure needs a place to call home. We rested our weary bones and dried our wet skin at Mansefield House in Arrochar, a luxurious and beautiful house with views of the water and hills.

Driving up the House’s drive is a statement in itself, and just off the road which hugs the loch, you’ll find a picture-perfect dolls house set back from a thick green garden. The key was left on the doorstep for us, because there is no crime in the Highlands of course, and we let ourselves into this magnificent home.

With a lounge which has big sofas surrounding a roaring fire, five exquisitely decorated bedrooms and a kitchen which was made for social gatherings, we knew we’d found our Scottish retreat.

On arrival we were greeted by tea, coffee and some delicious Scottish shortbread to tide us over for the next few days, as well as a handbook filled with useful info and menus.

We settled ourselves in for a night sheltering from the storm which was battering the windows, with wine, a fire, good food and a marathon game of Cards Against Humanity, before allowing ourselves to sink into the glorious beds which fill every bedroom.

Nearby are a whole range of activities, and walkers will be able to leave the house and walk straight up a hill to the snowline, or along the loch for a more sedate stroll. Just 20 minutes north is Glen Coe, and further on from there is Fort William, Loch Ness and the deep north of Scotland.

Mansefield’s host, Fiona, is a gem, and will welcome you with open arms – be sure to check out the gallery she runs and works in behind the house for tasty treats and beautiful Scottish pottery!

How to get there

Set within the Loch Lomond National park and in the quiet and pretty village of Arrochar, Mansefield House is just a 40 minute drive from Glasgow Airport. You can find directions here.
